The revised Geneva City School District budget was approved by voters Tuesday, with just over 63 percent voting in favor.

Voters turned out in near record proportions to weigh in on the city school’s revised budget, which proposed a 1.72 percent tax levy increase, down from the original 1.95 percent proposed increase. Both proposals exceeded the district’s .34 percent tax levy cap and so required 60 percent voter approval to pass.

“We are thrilled with the results of this vote,” said Superintendent Trina Newton. “The near record turnout and 1,435 yes votes is a clear vote of confidence in the work that our teachers, administrators and support staff are doing. It’s also an indication of how strongly this city believes in its young people, in their future, and in their ability to change the world for the better. We are so grateful to all of our supporters and to the taxpayers of this district. This budget will allow us to improve the education and environment we offer our students—it’s an important step in providing Geneva’s children the opportunities they both need and deserve.”
